Mahalakshmi Vrata

Also known as Varalaksmi Vratha, Mahalakshmi Vrata is one of the sacred and most important festivals in India. It is prevalent among the people of the Hindu community. It is held before the full moon in the month of Sravana according to the Hindu calendar. The period falls between the months of July and August.

The Mahalakshmi Vrata Festival is performed by married Hindu ladies. The ritual is in the form of a vow, known as Vrata in Sanskrit. Mahalakshmi Vrata is mainly celebrated in the in various states across the country like Andhra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and different parts of Maharashtra and Orissa.

Varalaksmi Vratha is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth. The women pay homage to the Goddess in the form of puja. The puja is performed in order to seek blessings from the Goddess in order to keep the entire household full of prosperity.

On the day of the Mahalakshmi Vrata Festival, women get up from bed early and take bath and wear new clothes and traditional jewelry. The homes are cleaned and the floors are adorned with rangolis. Women fill a pot with water and rice and cover the pot with mango and betel leaves. The coconut is then decorated with a new cloth and the pot is placed in front of the idol of Goddess Lakshmi. The main puja starts with the worship of Lord Ganesha who drives away all hurdles and evil forces. At the later part of the puja Goddess Lakshmi is invoked into the kalasha.

The festival of Mahalakshmi Vrata is celebrated with wide enthusiasm. People meet each other and exchange greetings. People exchange gifts and sweets among each other and take part in traditional music and dance performances. The festival in fact portrays the rich heritage and culture of the Hindu community.
